At Ottobock Care Ireland, our specialist prosthetic physiotherapy service supports people of all ages living with limb absence. Our physiotherapy service works alongside our prosthetic team to help each person achieve their individual goals, whether that means becoming more confident moving around the home, returning to work and community activities, or getting back to sport and running.
Prosthetic Physiotherapy.
Who can benefit?
Our service supports people with both upper and lower limb prostheses, including those with limb absence resulting from:
Orthopaedic conditions
Sarcoma
Trauma
Congenital limb difference
Vascular conditions
We also consider other health conditions or physical challenges that may affect how someone uses their prosthesis or their ability to move safely and comfortably.
How can prosthetic physiotherapy help?
Everyone's goals are different. Physiotherapy can support patients at whatever stage of their rehabilitation they are at, helping them work towards meaningful, personalised goals.
This could include:
Improving strength, balance and mobility
Becoming more confident moving around the home
Improving access to and participation in the community
Developing walking and functional skills with a prosthesis
Returning to work, hobbies or physical activity
Improving fitness and conditioning
Returning to sport, including running and other high-level activities
Our approach is tailored to the individual, with treatment and rehabilitation progressing at a pace that is appropriate for each patient.
What does the service involve?
Physiotherapy is primarily provided on a one-to-one basis and may take place in the clinic, at home, or within the community depending on the individual's needs and goals.
Where appropriate, we can also provide small group sessions and work jointly with other members of the multidisciplinary team to support the best possible outcome.
Working as part of your wider care team.
Our prosthetic physiotherapy service works closely with prosthetists and other healthcare professionals. This collaborative approach allows us to consider the whole person and how their prosthesis interacts with their strength, movement, function and everyday life. We can also work with local physiotherapy teams, providing guidance and education where specialist prosthetic physiotherapy is not available locally. While the service is based in Dublin, outreach beyond Leinster may be available where appropriate.
Specialist experience.
Our prosthetic physiotherapy service is supported by a physiotherapist with more than 10 years' experience working across prosthetics and the disability sector.
The service also contributes to the development of prosthetic rehabilitation through professional leadership, including involvement with the Chartered Physiotherapists in Limb Absence Rehabilitation (Ireland).
Your goals, your rehabilitation.
Whether your goal is to walk confidently around your home, return to your local community, get back to work, or run a marathon, our prosthetic physiotherapy service can help you work towards what matters most to you.
